Responsible trading is vital

NOffLA will be holding two Responsible Trading in the Community (RTC) workshops, providing vital training to maintain the high standards of NOffLA members

NOffLA is delighted to announce two Responsible Trading in the Community (RTC) workshops to be held on Tuesday, 20 and Tuesday 27 October at Edward Dillion & Company’s premises in the East Point Business Park in Dublin 3. This vital training, which has proved invaluable to previous attendees, deals with all matters relating to the current legislation in a practical and informative manner.

The Responsible Trading in the Community (RTC) programme, created and implemented by the National Off-Licence Association, has come to be recognised as one of the most successful initiatives for tackling the alcohol misuse and underage drinking problems in Ireland over many years.

The integrity of the RTC is founded on the basis that companies and individuals involved on a day to day basis with consumers of alcohol, need to make a binding commitment to conduct their trade in the most responsible and professional manner.

“A Practical Training Programme for the Off-Trade” is an exclusive, sophisticated and focused training module designed to provide the off-trade with a robust and effective training regime that covers key issues relevant to the trade, together with a practical application in the workplace. The programme has been developed to recognised training standards and combines traditional lecture based methods with interactive exercises and experiential learning.

Course objectives

RTC provides you with the opportunity to receive up-to-date information on legislation and an appreciation of the impact of the laws on the work place. In addition the course incorporates the skills needed to help you deal with difficult situations that could potentially put your job and your livelihood at risk.

By the end of the programme participants will be able to:

• Apply the knowledge surrounding relevant legislation to the workplace
• Understand enforcement procedures and penalties
• Distinguish between legitimate and unlawful customers
• Identify when and how to refuse a sale
• Recognise and list acceptable forms of identification
• Brief staff on key “responsible trading” issues and industry best practice

Participants will be invited to participate in discussions, learn from the experience of others and to participate in the interactive exercises on the day.

Importance of training

All NOffLA members must hold RTC accreditation. Members are reminded of the importance of achieving – and maintaining – this professional standard. As NOffLA Chairman, Jim McCabe, reminded the participants: “It has been acknowledged, both in Ireland and internationally, as the most positive, proactive initiative to promote responsible retailing of alcohol”.
