First Irish person accredited by Burgundy

Des King is one of the first Irish wine educators to become an Accredited Burgundy Educator by the Burgundy Wine Board (BIVB) and the Burgundy Wine School (L’Ecole des Vins).

Des King is one of the first Irish wine educators to become an Accredited Burgundy Educator by the Burgundy Wine Board (BIVB) and the Burgundy Wine School (L’Ecole des Vins). First launched in 2008, the accreditation programme is attended by wine educators and experts from across the US, UK and, for the first time, Ireland. The candidates are selected to participate in the program by the BIVB for their experience and expertise in wine training.

Participants attend a seminar in Burgundy hosted by BIVB to strengthen their knowledge of Burgundy wines, and in addition, attend theoretical classes, domain visits and wine tastings. At the end of the week, each candidate is assessed in their acquired skills. The newly accredited educators are then responsible for conveying to key audiences the specificities of Burgundy wines.
King is a WSET Diploma alumni and a former lecturer with the Wine Board of Ireland. He has had a very successful career in marketing and sales management in the wine industry: he is currently brand manager for Gleeson Wines and was a former sales manager for O’Briens Wines, as well as proprietor of King Wine Merchants.

The education seminar is part of BIVB’s export program which places a strong focus on training, with a view to providing information to relevant educators in each country of the export program.
