Shane Carberry wins VFI Bar Studies 2012 award

The Vintners Federation of Ireland presented Shane Carberry with its annual award for the best Bar Studies graduate in final year studies at the Dublin Institute of Technology recently at a graduation ceremony held in St Patricks Catheral, Dublin.

Shane was congratulated by VFI Chief Executive Padraig Cribben and VFI President Gerry Rafter who also congratulated all the successful graduates, reminding them of the changing nature of the bar business and the significant link they play between the consumer and the bar industry business going forward.

This award recognises the student who achieves first place in their final year examinations on the Batchelor of Science (BSc) Honours degree in Bar Studies – Management and Entrepreneurship.

The four year degree in bar studies is the first of it’s kind in the world and was designed  to respond to the rapid changes taking place in the hospitality industy.

‘Licensed premises’ not only include the traditional public bars but also off-licences, gastropubs, microbreweries, bar-restaurants, and nightclubs.

There’s been an increasing trend towards the development of public house groups and the subsequent development of more sophisticated management approaches including products, systems, human resources and marketing, contends the Programme Chairman of the Bar Studies degree James Murphy.

Another major development has been the internationalisation of the Irish public house with significant numbers being established successfully internationally in recent years.  These factors have helped drive the demand for managers and highly-trained staff  with higher-level entrepreneurial skills and flair.
