Retail sales edge up in April

CSO figures show food and drink sales remain under pressure despite modest retail growth

Irish retail sales recorded modest growth in March 2026, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office, with food, beverage and bar sales continuing to face mixed trading conditions.

Within the grocery and drinks trade, the Food, Beverages & Tobacco category recorded a 0.7% monthly increase in sales volumes

The volume of overall retail sales increased by 0.2% in the month and was 1.6% higher compared to March 2025.

Excluding motor trades, retail sales volumes rose by 0.1% month-on-month and by 1.3% annually.

The value of retail sales increased by 0.5% during the month and was up 3.8% year-on-year, reflecting continued inflationary pressure across the sector.

Within the grocery and drinks trade, the Food, Beverages & Tobacco category recorded a 0.7% monthly increase in sales volumes.

However, volumes remained 2.1% lower than the same period last year, highlighting ongoing pressure on consumer purchasing behaviour despite continued value growth.

The value of sales in the category increased by 1.1% in the month and by 0.5% annually.

Bars also experienced a challenging month, with sales volumes falling 2.7% compared to February, although volumes were marginally ahead year-on-year at 0.4%. In value terms, bar sales declined 1.9% during the month but remained 2.3% higher annually.

Fuel sales values increased sharply by 7.7% in March and were up 10.5% compared to March 2025, with the CSO noting that inflation continued to impact the sector.

Commenting on the figures, CSO statistician Tommy Allen said the overall increase in retail activity was supported by gains across several sectors, including electrical goods and hardware, while books, newspapers and bars recorded the largest monthly declines.

The latest data reflects continued caution among consumers as businesses across the food, drink and hospitality sectors contend with rising operating costs and value-conscious spending habits.
