March restaurant card spend in up 134%

Credit and debit card spend in restaurants rose by 134%, or €269 million, in March compared to the same month in 2021 according to figures published by the Central Bank recently.

The March card spend in restaurants was up by a more modest 15%, or €60 million, when compared to the previous month, February.

Social spending by debit and credit card in March rose by 14%, or €94 million, compared to the previous month. Compared to the previous year however, social spend increased by 77%, or €329 million. This was driven by an increase in card spend in restaurants and card spend on entertainment which increased by 29% or €58 million.

Total card spend in retail increased by 15%, or €415 million, in March compared to February. Card spend increased across all retail sectors, with card spend in the groceries sector recording the largest monthly increase of €159 million.
