Cork cash and carry opens seven days for publicans minding cash flow this Christmas

With costs up across the board, more publicans and bar owners are going into Christmas buying little and often rather than filling the storeroom in November. Galvins Wines & Spirits, a family-run drinks wholesaler in Cork since 1968, is backing that approach with service seven days a week and a new Galvins Cash & Carry Card for the trade.

Galvins is the only specialist drinks cash and carry in Cork. From its warehouse at the rear of 37 Bandon Road, at the top of Barrack Street in the heart of the city, it keeps over 300 lines in stock, including more than 130 Irish whiskeys, along with spirits, wine, beer, cider, soft drinks and kegs. It’s open Monday to Saturday 9am to 7pm and Sunday 12:30pm to 7pm, so a bar that runs short on a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon can call in and be sorted the same day.

“Christmas is the busiest few weeks of the year, but it’s also when people get caught with money tied up in stock,” said Barry Galvin of Galvins Wines & Spirits. “We’d much rather a publican called in to us two or three times a week and took what they need than bought everything at the start of December and had half of it left in January. That’s how my family has always done it, and it suits the bar as much as it suits us.”

Importer and bonded warehouse

Galvins is more than a cash and carry. The family has been importing beers, wines and spirits into Ireland since the 1970s and operates an external bonded warehouse, so it can bring in wines, beers and spirits direct from producers at home and abroad. With a dedicated team of buyers, Galvins supplies wholesale accounts and distributors nationally, both duty paid and under bond, while the cash and carry remains a local business serving the Cork trade.
