Revenue seizures up 165%

The Annual Report from the Revenue Commissioners indicates that the Revenue Inspectors seized 252,101 litres of illicit alcohol valued at €1.5 million last year through 1,756 individual seizures as a result of increased co-operation and intelligence sharing between Revenue and other EU Member States in relation to the movement of product between bonded warehouses within the EU.

This 252,101 litre-figure is up 165% compared to 2017 but all this resulted in just two prosecutions for alcohol tax evasion and two for alcohol smuggling.

Ireland also participated in a number of multinational operations involving other Member States, targeting fraudulent movements of alcohol products.
