“What’ve you got in draught beer?”

With all the pressure on bar space, Claremorris County Mayo publican Niall Hanley’s North Carolina bar, the Raleigh Beer Garden, aims to secure a place in the Guinness Book of Records for the greatest number of beers on tap in any one pub.

With a count of 378, Niall knows what he has to do to get that hallowed place in the Guinness Book of Records: “We have to have 378 to beat the record and they all have to be pulling in line the day the guys from the Guinness World Records come out,” Niall told The Mayo News recently.

The pub is a large venue and averages 300 kegs a week, says Niall.

The beer menu is also available as an app so that customers can peruse the contents at a more leisurely pace than would be the case under the watchful gaze of the patient barman in person – anyway, the beers’ availability can change by the hour.

Niall opened his first venue, The Hibernian, in 2000 and subsequently added two more together with a nightclub called Solas and a Tex Mex restaurant.

Niall likes to keep things local so over 100 of the selection of 378 are from North Carolina.

The word seems to be spreading; so far he’s had calls from Iceland and Holland enquiring about his collection.

And like most Irish pubs abroad, he’d love to get more Irish bar staff. He told The Mayo News, “I would love more Irish working here. Students on J1s are inclined to go to New York and San Francisco but I’d love to get a few more over here.”

When asked about his recipe for success, his answer was simple.

— “Controlled Chaos” he joked.
