Dublin Town backs proposed city centre safety scheme

The business group welcomes plans for a pilot Safety Operative Scheme to improve safety in Dublin city centre

Dublin Town has welcomed moves by the Government, Dublin City Council, the Dublin City Taskforce Report Special Purpose Vehicle, and other state agencies to improve safety in the City centre.

It found that while perceptions of the City centre in general are improving,  safety remains a key challenge, particularly on the Northside

The Business Improvement District group says it will be happy to help implement a proposed pilot of a Safety Operative Scheme.

The proposal was part of the 2024 Dublin City Taskforce Report, which Dublin Town and businesses backed.

Dublin Town has previously stated that while businesses are consistently calling for additional Garda resources, initiatives that may improve safety must be trialled.

Dublin Town believes security similar to that already in operation on the Luas and on Irish Rail, in addition to more Gardaí, will be a good thing for those who live, work and visit the City centre.

The organisation pointed out that similar schemes have been successfully implemented by local authorities and police in cities throughout the UK, with the input and co-operation of business groups similar to Dublin Town.

Dublin Town commissioned research by Red C into attitudes to Dublin City Centre last May.

It found that while perceptions of the City centre in general are improving, safety remains a key challenge, particularly on the Northside. There was widespread reference by respondents to perceptions of safety, and says this must be addressed.

Dublin Town will do all that it can to improve safety and perceptions of safety in the City centre, and believes this pilot will give people a sense of enhanced safety while supporting the important statutory role the Gardai play in keeping our city safe.

Dublin Town represents over 2,500 businesses in the City centre and works to improve the commercial environment, promote it as a shopping and leisure destination.

The organisation runs initiatives like its famed Christmas lighting, as well as additional cleaning, business supports, training for businesses, and various annual festivals.

It also organises and supports other initiatives aimed at enlivening the City centre for people of all ages.
