Revenue seize €302k of counterfeit wine

As a result of routine profiling, officers from Revenue recently seized 24,750 litres of counterfeit wine at the Tivoli Container Terminal in Cork following the search of an unaccompanied container originating in the Netherlands.
Revenue officials conducted 1,808 alcohol seizures last year, totalling 764,174 litres of counterfeit alcohol worth €4.17 million.

The counterfeit alcohol had an estimated retail value of almost €302,000 representing a loss to the Exchequer of approximately €161,500.  Investigations are ongoing.

This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illicit alcohol products in the shadow economy.  Revenue has anti-smuggling teams at all main ports and airports and at the main postal depots who routinely profile imports and exports and carry out x-ray examinations and physical examinations based on risk assessment.
