Excessive drinking “no big deal” believe 43%

Some degree of disparity surrounds the latest survey findings on attitudes to alcohol. According to research commissioned by Drinkaware  seven in 10 Irish adults believe that drinking to excess is part of Irish culture while 43% believe that drinking to excess is “no big deal”.

But the survey also found that three in four Irish adults have become much more aware of how alcohol affects their health and wellbeing while nine in 10 attach considerable importance to raising awareness around low-risk guidelines for weekly alcohol consumption.

1,000 Irish adults aged 18 and over were interviewed as part of the research which revealed worrying attitudes towards excessive drinking.

The research also highlighted that one in three people want to drink less but can struggle to do so, particularly once they begin drinking.

In 2018 so far, over 25,000 people have used the Drinkaware online Drinks Calculator to monitor their intake.

When asked where they get information about alcohol, 40% of Irish people named Drinkaware as the number one trusted source of information – without prompt.
