Darren Costello wins Bacardí Legacy place

Darren Costello from the Brasserie on the Corner bar in Galway has won the Bacardí Legacy National Competition 2013 with his Homage to Sitges cocktail.

Darren’s creation was inspired by a quote from American designer Jac Vanec and is made up using Bacardí superior rum with fresh lime juice, orgeat almond syrup, a small pinch of sea salt and brought to life with fresh chilli and sugar syrup.

With over 50 entries from around the country, 10 elite finalists were chosen to compete for the title at the national final in Harry’s on the Green in Dublin. As well as creating a winning cocktail, finalists had to produce a promotional plan which they developed to promote their cocktail in bars as well as on social and traditional media as part of the competition criteria.

At the final, each competitor had a chance to dazzle the crowd with their mixology skills and create a perfect Original Bacardí Daiquiri as well as their signature cocktail. In addition to the judging process on the night, the panel of industry experts have been monitoring the success of each cocktail over the last few months to ensure that each one had the potential to join the unique Bacardí heritage of legacy cocktails.

Darren will now head to the UK Bacardí Legacy Final on the 7th February for the next stage of the worldwide competition.  At the event, three mixologists will be chosen from the UK and Ireland to head to the Global Bacardí Legacy Final where they’ll have a chance to be specially trained by the Bacardí  team and compete against the world’s top mixologists for their chance to have their signature cocktail become the Bacardí Legacy cocktail of the year.

Bacardí  Superior Rum has been used to inspire cocktails for almost 150 years with drinks such as the Daiquiri and the Mojito. The Bacardí Legacy Competition challenges the best contemporary bartenders in the world to create balanced, refreshing, appealing and enduring drinks that will become part of the illustrious Bacardí Cocktail Legacy alongside classics such as The Original Bacardí Rum Daiquiri and The Original Bacardí  rum Mojito.

Speaking at the announcement of the Irish winner, Bacardí Marketing Manager Tiernan O’Morain said, “Darren has created a cocktail that fits into the Bacardí heritage and we believe he now has an excellent chance of competing in the UK Bacardí Legacy Final and hopefully being chosen for the global final. It has been an inspiring few months evaluating the talent that Irish bartenders have to offer and we want to thank everyone for entering and spending time creating their signature cocktail.”
