Call for multi-pack ban

While it’s illegal for the on-trade to sell three measures of alcohol in one glass, it’s not illegal for an off-licence to sell multi-packs of alcohol.

Matt Hughes of Hughes’s Bar, Ballinamore Bridge, County Galway, pointed out at this year’s VFI conference that this restriction on the licensed trade was doing untold damage.

“Our local recycling bins are full to the neck with multipacks of a Sunday morning,” he claimed, adding that he wanted the VFI to lobby the government to ensure that all alcohol sales be made in individual units only and not multi-packs.

The motion was carried.
