Alcohol prices fall 0.5%

The price of alcohol fell by 0.5% in the 12 months to the end of January 2015 according to CSO figures.

They fell by 0.3% in the three month period from November to the end of January when compared to the same period in 2014 but rose by 1.3% in the month of January when compared to the previous month, December 2014.

In the off-trade, alcoholic beverage prices fell by 1.9% over the 12 months to the end of January 2015. The fall consisted of a 1.6% fall in spirits prices, a 0.2% fall in wine prices and a 3.7% fall in beer prices.

Compared with the previous month, December, alcoholic beverage prices rose by 4.3% in the off-trade comprising a 12.0% rise in spirits prices, a 4.5% rise in wine prices and a 1.4% rise in beer prices.

In the on-trade, prices in licensed premises rose by 0.4% in the 12 months to the end of January 2015 which comprised a 0.5% rise in spirits prices and a 0.4% rise in wine and beer prices, soft drinks and mineral water prices.

Compared to the previous month, December, January 2015 witnessed a 0.1% rise in prices in licensed premises.
