You can bank on it, Sir….

Jean Charles Cazes, proprietor of Chateau Lynch Bages and J M Cazes Selection of Bordeaux wines, was in Dublin recently to promote his winery’s new-look packaging as well as an addition to the range.

During the course of a tasting lunch in One Pico, he amusingly highlighted the sometimes less-than-fraternal competitive instincts of the wine growers on the respective left and right banks of the Garonne which flows through Bordeaux.

As a callow youth, his family transferred his schooling from one on the Garonne’s right bank where he’d lived to one on the left bank (where he hadn’t).

On being queried about what his family did for a living by his new teacher, Jean Charles the new boy told him that his family were winemakers.

— “Winemakers??” asked the teacher, mock incredulously, “You mean they grow wine over there?”….
