SuperValu keeps Tesco from top Christmas alcohol spot

Tesco lost share in the off-trade beer and wine market in the Christmas period. In the 12 weeks to 29th December 2019 Tesco’s share fell from 26.9% of the market to 26.0% when compared to the same 12 weeks in 2018 according to recent Kantar figures.

Over the course of the year to 29th December 2019 however Tesco remained top dog in beer and wine sales.

During this period SuperValu grew its share from 27.5% to 29.7% and Dunnes Stores increased its share from 19.1% to 19.9%.

Discounter Aldi on the other hand lost share, going from 8.4% to 8.1%. Lidl too found itself losing share, going from 9.1% to 9.0%.

‘All Others’ also saw their share of the beer and wine market shrink from 7.3% to 6.4%.

Over the course of the year to 29th December 2019 however Tesco remained top dog in beer and wine sales with a market share of 21.6%, albeit down from 22.0% in the year to 30th December 2018.

SuperValu’s share also shrunk in the year to 29th December to 21.4% from 21.8% while Dunnes Stores saw a growth in its share from 22.1% to 22.6%.

Both discounters Aldi and Lidl saw growth to 12.1%  and 11.6% respectively in the year, up from 11.3% for each in the previous year.

‘Others’ saw further contraction in the year from an 11.5% share to 10.7%.
