On-trade July card spend up 24% – Revolut

Last month saw recovery continue in the Irish hospitality industry with new figures from card company Revolut indicating a 24% monthly card spend increase in 'drinking places/bars' in July over June.

Revolut’s data suggests that there may be light at the end of the tunnel for the domestic hospitality industry, with spending at restaurants and bars significantly higher in July than June – probably helped by the excellent weather as well as the return of indoor dining.

Compared with July 2020, Revolut card spend in this sector was up 43%.

The average monthly spend of €88.60 in July was 10% up on that of June.

The number of those using Revolut in drinking places/bars also increased by 14% in July over June.

Similarly, Revolut figures for restaurants indicated a 24% rise in spend for July over June, with an average monthly Revolut card spend in restaurants of €82.20, up 15% over June.

Compared to July 2020, restaurant Revolut card spend was up 13%.

The number of users spending in this category was up 8% in July when compared with the previous month.

July’s continuing recovery in the hospitality industry was “arguably assisted by the July heatwave, which boosted outdoor eating and drinking” stated Sebastian Hamilton, Head of Public Affairs at Revolut Ireland, “Domestic spending in restaurants was 15% higher in July than it had been in June – including five days of indoor dining. Equally, domestic spending in bars was up by 24% in July compared to June”.
