MPs to debate Beer Tax Escalator

MPs in the UK are to debate the social and economic impacts of the beer duty escalator tax as part of a three-hour debate on November 1st.

This follows representations made following an e-petition which called for the scrapping of the beer duty escalator as being destructive to jobs and the drinks industry there reaching 100,000 signatures last September.

The debate will result in a ‘voteable motion’ that may call on the Government there to review taxation policy on alcohol in advance of the 2013 Budget.

The Beer Duty Escalator which introduces excise increases at a constant two per cent above inflation each year, was introduced by the Labour Government but has never been reviewed since it was first used.
