Matcha becomes Ireland’s fastest-growing drink
New data from Square shows matcha is now the nation’s fastest-growing coffee beverage.
Matcha sales have grown by 155% between 2024 and 2025 in June & July
Matcha sales in Irish cafés and bakeries surged by 155% year-on-year in June and July 2025 – marking a 558% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
This is in stark contrast to the growth of traditional coffee drinks, like cappuccinos and flat whites, which have seen 6% and 10% respective YoY growth.
Square’s payments data in Ireland shows:
- Matcha sales have grown by 155% between 2024 and 2025 in June & July
- Between June and July, matcha drinks were sold for an average of €4.62, generating over €444k in sales
- Matcha makes up nearly 5% of all coffee drinks sales – an increase from just over 2% in 2024
Elaine Fitzsimons, founder of The Matcha Bar: “I opened The Matcha Bar in Dublin in July 2024, after struggling to find high-quality matcha in the city.
“Most cafés focused on coffee, but there weren’t any dedicated to creating only matcha drinks.
“Matcha has become incredibly popular in Ireland, particularly among under-35s and those who want a healthier alternative to coffee.
“The aesthetic of matcha is a big part of its appeal. The vibrant matcha green, paired with colourful flavours like mango and strawberry, makes it a drink that people want to get a photo with and post on social media.
“Fun seasonal flavours – like gingerbread and maple sea salt during the festive period – are also popular alongside the year-round classics.
“Even though there is strong customer demand, cafés and bakeries should only add matcha to their menu if they’re committed to doing it right.
“Customers care so much about the quality of their matcha – where it comes from, how it’s made and stored, and even the colour.
“By investing in high-quality matcha and paying attention to what customers want, matcha drinks can be a powerful revenue stream for Irish businesses.”
