Karim for Sydney with Bacardí

Karim Mehdl from Saba bar & restaurant emerged the winner of the Bacardí Legacy Irish Finals 2015 which took place at The Odeon in Dublin’s Harcourt Street recently.

As a result of his winning ‘Simply Garrigue’ cocktail, he’ll travel to Sydney, Australia, in May to represent Ireland at the Global Bacardí Legacy Final.

The award-winning Simply Garrigue cocktail consists of 50ml Bacardí Superior Rum,  20ml of lemon juice, 20ml of Orgeat syrup, 15ml of Green Chartreuse and a pinch of sea salt, garnished with a lemon twist and dry lavender sprayed with lavender oil.

Karim was inspired by the faith, passion and perseverance of the Bacardí family overcoming many obstacles to create a legacy that will live on. Simply Garrigue takes its roots from the scents and flavours of Provence where Karim spent his earliest years. He believes that his creation comes from childhood memories and experiences, just as Don Facundo Bacardi created Bacardi from his experiences of taste and scents as a child in France.

On the night, the top 10 finalists, chosen from over 60 entries to compete for the title, had to produce a promotional plan which they developed to promote their cocktail in bars, on social and traditional media as part of the competition criteria.

At the final, each competitor had a chance to dazzle the crowd with their mixology skills and create a perfect Original Bacardí Daiquiri as well as their signature cocktail. In addition to the judging process on the night, the panel of industry experts have been monitoring the success of each cocktail over the last few months to ensure that each one had the potential to join the unique Bacardí heritage of legacy cocktails.

The Bacardí Legacy Competition challenges the best contemporary bartenders in the world to create balanced, refreshing, appealing and enduring drinks that will become part of the illustrious Bacardí Cocktail Legacy alongside classics such as The Original Bacardí Rum Daiquiri and The Original Bacardí rum Mojito.

“Karim has created a cocktail that fits into the Bacardí heritage and we believe he’s an excellent representative of the best of the Irish mixology scene,” commented Bacardí’s Marketing Manager Tiernan O’Moráin, “It has been an inspiring few months evaluating the talent that Irish bartenders have to offer and we want to thank everyone for entering and spending time creating their signature cocktail.”
