‘Guinness Zero’, brewed at St James’s Gate in Dublin, was due to be launched here this month in canned format in supermarkets and off-licences, but had already gone ahead in the UK from the beginning of the month.

However Diageo has now recalled the product in Great Britain “as a precautionary measure” due to a microbiological contamination “which may make some cans of Guinness 0.0 unsafe to consume,” said the company in a short statement which was accompanied by an apology.

“The issue is isolated to Guinness 0.0 and does not impact any other Guinness variants or brands,” it added, stressing, “At no point has the product been on sale to the general public in Ireland.”

In the UK Diageo stated that it hoped to relaunch the product there again soon but, “production will only recommence when we are completely satisfied that we have eliminated the root cause of the issue”.
