The ups and downs of a golfing dinner.

This year’s LVA AGM Dinner was a well-attended event, the first such occasion in two years, Covid having spoiled the party for 2020 and 2021. Much had obviously taken place in the intervening period and so there was much for the members to talk about over an excellent repast at the Radisson Blu in Dublin’s Golden Lane.

Sadly too a number of members had passed away in the interim. The conversation led on to happier times and cherished memories of those now gone took up the running at our table when one South County Dublin publican in particular was fondly remembered as was the prank played on him while he was feeling somewhat tired after a long day’s golf.

Slipping into a post-prandial slumber in his chair at the dining table, rather than disturb him, both he and his chair were quietly and gently raised up by a four-ball of obliging helpers who transferred the recumbent golfer to the hotel’s lift where he was softly deposited in a corner at the back. His chums then made their way back to the bar to continue the revelries.

It emerged as a mystery to him the next morning how everyone at breakfast in the hotel seemed to know him while giving him a sympathetic smile and a knowing wink.
