Carrefour expands PepsiCo boycott across Europe amid price dispute

Carrefour has broadened its boycott of PepsiCo products, initially announced in France, to include Spain, Italy, and Belgium in an ongoing disagreement over pricing. Carrefour, known for its recent ‘shrinkflation’ campaign, has removed PepsiCo snacks and drinks, including popular brands like Lay’s and Doritos, from its displays.

PepsiCo’s 2022 fiscal year reported Europe contributing $12.7 billion (€11.6 billion) in revenue, split evenly between beverages and convenient foods. Carrefour’s move aligns with a wider industry push for lower prices, as highlighted by Michel-Edouard Leclerc, urging suppliers to reduce prices on LinkedIn.

Michel-Edouard Leclerc, president, E.Leclerc, said: “Like you, we are fed up with inflation. You feel like you’ve been cheated. And since we’re in a period of negotiations, we’re putting pressure on our suppliers… And we put pressure on ourselves.”

French authorities have also joined the fight against ‘shrinkflation,’ seeking EU clearance to mandate grocers to inform consumers about size reductions without price adjustments, according to Just Drinks. The situation in Italy, where a three-month inflation-tackling agreement ended last month, and Spain, which took steps to reduce inflation pressures, adds complexity to the evolving landscape of European retail negotiations.

Carrefour’s banners in stores across these countries state, “We no longer sell this brand due to an unacceptable price increase,” reflecting the ongoing tension between retailers and manufacturers over pricing policies.
