Bar sales fell 7.5% in January

Sales in bars fell 2.3 per cent in in value last January compared with the previous month, December 2011, according to seasonally-adjusted preliminary estimates from the CSO.

Over the year to January, value sales fell by 7.5 per cent while volume sales dropped by 7.7 per cent. January’s bar sales volumes dropped by 3.5 per cent compared to December 2011.

Final seasonally-adjusted figures for December 2011 indicate that bar sales values were up 2.1 per cent on November while they were down 1.7 per cent over the course of the year. Bar sales volumes in December fell by 1.5 per cent over the year but were up 3.7 per cent on the November figure.

Over the three-month period November 2011 to January 2012, bar sales values showed a 1.4 per cent increase on the previous three-month period but when compared to the November 2010 to January 2011 period a year previously, they showed a 4.1 per cent drop.

Bar sales showed a 4.1 per cent annual change in volume compared to the same period a year ago but a 0.9 per cent rise in volume when compared with the August to September 2011 period.

By comparison, the volume of general retail sales (ie  excluding price effects) decreased by 3.7 per cent in January when compared with December 2011 and there was an annual decrease of 0.8 per cent.

Retail sales values decreased by 3.7 per cent in January 2012 when compared with December 2011 and by 0.3 per cent over the year.
