Keg theft drops from 10% to 3%

Keg theft appears to be less of a problem than it was a year ago - but remains significant according to the Irish Brewers Association.

“The industry would estimate that there was a peak keg loss rate of 10% across the country a few years ago,” explained Jonathan McDade, Senior Executive with the IBA, “Through the introduction of a number of industry theft-prevention initiatives this has been reduced to 3% in recent years,” he told Drinks Industry Ireland.

He added that one such initiative, Heineken’s Keg Balancing scheme, had worked very well “which has resulted in behavioural change from publicans and no keg shortages over Christmas”. As well as that, new keg purchases in 2014 are roughly 10% of previous years’ purchases.
