Bar sales saw 12.8% annual increase in February

However, caution should be exercised with this level of growth as it is compared with a low base from the previous year
At 60.2% lager has the biggest share of Long Alcoholic Drink sales in Belfast. In Dublin lager has a 42.7% share.

There was a 12.8% annual increase in the volume of sales in bars in February 2023, and a 4.7% monthly increase. This is according to the Retail Sales Index February 2023 (Provisional) and January 2023 (Final) report from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Despite the significant increase, the report warned that caution should be exercised with this level of growth as it is compared with a low base from the previous year.  It said the volume of bar sales was 15.2% lower than the volume of sales recorded for pre-pandemic February 2020.

Meanwhile, there was a 7.0% annual decrease in the volume of food, beverage and tobacco (specialised stores) sales in January 2023, and a 0.2% monthly increase in the volume of food, beverage and tobacco (specialised stores) sales in the second month of this year.

However, the volume of food, beverage and tobacco (specialised stores) sales was 8.5% higher than the volume of sales recorded for pre-pandemic February 2020, according to the CSO’s data.

The proportion of retail sales transacted online from Irish registered companies was 5.3% in February 2023 compared with 5.4% in January 2023, 4.5% in February 2022, and 11.8% in February 2021.
