Cork Bartender wins Desperados competition

With his ritual Spice It Up! Stefan Nolan of SoHo Bar & Restaurant in Cork was crowned winner of the nationwide ‘My Desperados Is…’ competition held in Dublin’s Xico bar recently.

In the coming weeks Heineken Ireland will roll out his Desperados serving ritual across the country. Stefan himself also rolled away with a €5,000 holiday to any party destination of his choice.

“I wanted to create something that I could see in bars while living up to Desperado’s reputation, so I’m ecstatic with my win,” commented Stefan, “Bring on the holiday!”

“His hard work resulted in what’s sure to become an iconic serve for Desperados,” said Padraig O’Donoghue, Bar Manager at SoHo, “Well done from all the staff and management at SoHo – we’re all hoping Stefan will take us with him!”

Heineken Ireland had asked bartenders across the country to unleash their creativity to create the new Desperados ritual.

“The massive number of entries blew us away with their innovation, creativity and sense of fun,” commented Jeremy O’Murchu, Global Brand Activations Manager at Heineken Ireland, of the 68 bartender entries, “Stefan’s ‘Spice It Up!’ embodies the Desperados spirit in a quick, easy-to-make serve and is an incredibly deserving winner. We look forward to seeing the serve in bars across Ireland soon!”

2FM’s Eoghan McDermott judged the competition alongside Ronan Rogerson of Dublin Bar Academy and Jeremy O’Murchu from Heineken. Entrants were judged on an array of criteria from ease of serve to originality and taste.


The winning ‘Spice it Up!’ ritual

Ingredients: Desperados, sriracha sauce, lime wedge.

Method: three drops of sriracha, pop in a lime wedge, place thumb over the opening of bottle, invert for three seconds, turn upright, let air escape then serve with Desperados label always facing customer.

How long to make: 10 seconds.
