2010 alcohol excise revenue down €142 million on 2009
There were 26 convictions for alcohol smuggling last year and six convictions in relation to counterfeit spirits. There were 83 convictions in relation to excise licences.
In 2010, Revenue identified an alcohol diversion fraud relating to movements of duty-suspended alcohol from Ireland to Spain and Romania. An assessment has been raised and a demand issued for the duty evaded. This assessment has been appealed and is currently in the appeals process.
Total Revenue receipts for alcohol amounted to €826.4 million, “…exceeding target by €98.9million (13.6 per cent) and €142 million less than 2009,” stated the report.
