1800 seizures of alcohol in 2020

There were 1,808 seizures of beer, spirits & wine comprising 764,174 litres of alcohol with a value of €4.2 million according to the Revenue Commissioners' 2020 Annual Report.

 

2020's seizure was up 27% in value on 2019's €3.3 million illicit alcohol haul through 1,386 seizures amounting to 543,194 litres of alcohol (up 700% on 2018 figures).

“In 2020, we saw an increase in the number of larger seizures of illicit alcohol at our main ports,” explains the report, “This is as a result of increased cooperation and intelligence sharing between Ireland and other EU Member States in relation to the movement of product between bonded warehouses within the EU.”

Tax on alcohol products brought in €1.204 billion in 2020, down 29% on 2019’s figure of €1.233 billion.
