Tesco continues losing alcohol share

Tesco continues to lose alcohol market share to SuperValu and Dunnes Stores.

Kantar Worldpanel’s latest figures for wine and beer indicate that Tesco’s market share dropped from 27.4% (in the year to 3rd January 2016) to 26.6% (in the year to 1st January 2017).

Meanwhile SuperValu increased its market share from 23.0% to 23.8% and Dunnes too increased its share from 15.4% to 17.5%.

Discounters Aldi and Lidl lost share with Aldi’s share dropping to 11.4% from 12.0% and Lidl’s declining from 12.8% to 10.7%.

“While Tesco & Aldi have seen a dip in market share their overall sales have continued to grow, so there’s a relatively positive performance for both,” reports Kantar Worldpanel, adding, “The overall take-home alcohol market has posted positive value sales growth, with sales 8% higher than the previous year.”

Dunnes & SuperValu have both experienced very strong growth, driving their share of the market
