 Hotels, restaurants & bars up 6%

The Hotels, Restaurants & Bars and the Food & Drink categories both recorded positive growth in October, the start of the fourth quarter, according to Visa’s Irish Consumer Spending Index, produced by IHS Markit, which measures expenditure across all payment types (cash, cheques and electronic payments).

The Hotels, Restaurants & Bars category showed growth of 5.89% while Food & Drink grew 1.2% last month, signalling a pick-up in momentum according to the Index.

Halloween helped boost Irish consumer spending in October. Sharp and accelerated rises in expenditure were also recorded in the Recreation & Culture (up 9.3%).

Household expenditure was up 4.0% year-on-year, the fastest in four months following a modest rise of 1.5% in September.
