    NOffLA calls for Government to regulate alcohol retailing “immediately”

    A survey of NOffLA members has revealed that government inaction in regulating the retail of alcohol has had serious implications for independent off-licences. The recent decision by the Scottish Court of Session that the Scottish Parliament has the legal authority to introduce a Minimum Unit Price for all alcohol sold in Scotland is likely to have repercussions here in that the Department of Health now seems likely to include MUP proposals as part of an overall package of measures to tackle alcohol abuse, thought by some to be for introduction later this month. Pre-tax losses at Cassidy Wines to 31st May 2012 rose 140% to €461,610 compared to the previous year’s Operating Loss figure of €192,333 after sales decreased by nearly a fifth to €16.83 million during the year due to the loss of a distribution agreement with one of the multiples. Jean Smullen, a finalist in the recent International Wine and Spirit Competition’s ‘Communicator of the Year’, was showcasing sparkling wines from around the world at an Italian wine and spirits fair last week.
