A survey of NOffLA members has revealed that government inaction in regulating the retail of alcohol has had serious implications for independent off-licences.

Scots judge clears way for MUP
The recent decision by the Scottish Court of Session that the Scottish Parliament has the legal authority to introduce a Minimum Unit Price for all alcohol sold in Scotland is likely to have repercussions here in that the Department of Health now seems likely to include MUP proposals as part of an overall package of measures to tackle alcohol abuse, thought by some to be for introduction later this month.

Cassidy Wines increases pre-tax losses
Pre-tax losses at Cassidy Wines to 31st May 2012 rose 140% to €461,610 compared to the previous year’s Operating Loss figure of €192,333 after sales decreased by nearly a fifth to €16.83 million during the year due to the loss of a distribution agreement with one of the multiples.

Government avoided call for off-licence fee increase
The Minister for Health James Reilly has revealed that Cabinet has postponed a decision on his request to increase the licence fee paid by off-licences as a means of tackling alcohol misuse when fellow Ministers decided to take no action by this means “as yet”.
