A Beer They Call Brian

It was Christmas and there’s always one black sheep in the family.

But this time it was the Black Sheep Brewery in Yorkshire – brewer of the delightful All Creatures Bright & Beautiful Yorkshire Pale Ale and the iconic Black Sheep Ale – which launched a seasonal offering in ‘A Christmas Beer They Call Brian’, “a Very Naughty 3.9% ABV Pale Ale”, named after the ‘Life of Brian’ movie from the Pythons.

It’s the second collaborative beer with the Pythons. The brewery includes ‘Holy Grail’ in its range which it launched an awfully awfully long time ago (1999), 20 years after the cult film classic Life of Brian went on general release.

The Festive ‘Brian’ beer was named following a facebook vote amongst Monty Python’s 1.2 million followers which produced the name Brian.

The Python team then added the lines ‘A Christmas Beer They Call…’ and ‘A Very Naughty Pale Ale’ to placate Python Michael Palin who’d confessed he’d “quite like to see ‘naughty’ on a beer bottle”.

Ochone, ochone, while Holy Grail was available here via Premier International, no bottles of Brian were forthcoming in Ireland as the brand was only available on draught – which means that Irish pubs did not get the chance to try the brew.

Shame……

As shepherds at the Black Sheep Brewery watched their flocks by night, the three wise men preferred to watch a keg of A Christmas Beer They Call Brian.
